Bloomington: A Day Around the Square

Start with the courthouse square, leave time for a local meal, and follow your curiosity toward Kirkwood Avenue or the B-Line Trail.

Why make Bloomington your next stop?

Bloomington’s downtown puts shops, food, and places to explore within a walkable district. The Square and Kirkwood Avenue offer a useful starting point for a first visit. Rather than trying to see everything, choose a few blocks to explore and give yourself time to stop.

This is a suggested day out assembled from official visitor resources, not a firsthand trip report.

Start at the Square

Make the courthouse your landmark, then explore the businesses around it. Begin with a short walk before deciding where to eat or browse. It is an easy way to find the part of downtown that interests you most.

For current shops and dining options, use Visit Bloomington’s downtown guide. Let the available opening hours shape your route, rather than building the day around a business that may be closed.

Choose Kirkwood or the B-Line

Kirkwood Avenue gives you another downtown area to explore. If you would rather add a trail walk, consider a section of the B-Line. You don’t need to cover the whole trail to make it part of your visit.

Consult Visit Bloomington’s urban-trails guide for trail options. Pick a distance that works for your group and leave time for the return walk.

A simple afternoon plan

Start with a walk around the Square. Choose lunch locally, then spend the afternoon browsing or taking a manageable walk along Kirkwood or the B-Line. Keep one stop optional so the day has room to breathe.

If rain changes the plan, check the official downtown guide for indoor attractions or galleries before setting out.

Before you go

Check current parking rules, business hours, weather, and any event-related changes. Ask individual venues about accessibility or specific needs. The courthouse photo above was taken in 2009 and is included as a dated view of the landmark.
